Golden Bee 6 / October 2, 2004 / 15:40
More than three weeks have passed since the event took place. And the current entry should have appeared here 3 weeks ago. But 4 (four) CSS-based mini-sites and one even smaller project prevented me from doing this at the right time. It seems better late than never, though.
The Work of the Jury
It happened so that I (together with a very smart and talented interpreter, Kate) had to help the jury communicate with each other translating from English into Russian and vice versa.
Frankly, it was my first simultaneous translation experience and I'm not very happy with the way I performed. Anyways, designers never seem to be satisfied with their own work even if a designer does some interpreting :)
All “the big shots” [Werner Jeker (Switzerland), Daniela Haufe—Detlef Fiedler, “Cyan” (Germany), Oleg Veklenko (Ukraine), Phil Risbeck (USA) and Eugeny Dobrovinsky (Russia)] appeared open and friendly people devoid of any arrogance or superiority. The atmosphere could have probably been different if Neville Brody hadn't refused to come. (We were making for the airport to pick him up when bad telephone news arrived: “Brody isn't coming”.) But again, I don't know him personally, thus, my assumption is just… well… my assumption.
The friendly atmosphere changed into serious and professional work when it came to the discussions directly. I noticed an interesting tendency in the work of the jury. Most of the time there was some dissent in choosing and evaluating works between the “eastern” part of the jury (Oleg Veklenko and Eugeny Dobrovinsky) and their “western” colleagues (cultural, social and, probably, professional distinctions are to blame, I guess).
The western jury members were not unanimous either. The only woman in the jury, Daniela Haufe (“Cyan”, Germany), proved herself forceful and efficient debater with a unique approach to the process of choosing and judging the graphic design pieces.
It took the jury two working days to determine the winners in all the four categories: “Posters”, “Typography”, “Antiterror” and “Student Design”. The list of award-winners is available here (several pictures included) and at the official “Golden Bee 6” site.

Fluid & Fixed
Which approach is better: fluid or fixed? It all depends… (Using my current work as illustration.)
Designin' Outside The Box
My current web-design projects may end up as liquid layouts. At least I'd love them to.
