Leaving PC for PB / April 13 / 12:57

Well, this place hasn't seen a word since January, 16 which makes it almost three months of silence. What I've been busy with over the period of time is far from just sitting and producing calm :) There have been several posts at the Russian version of id-as.com and two mini-sites for my current employer. And one more bigger project for an art gallery.

I've been a PC-user since 1995 when I bought my first 486/66 Mhz machine. My current computer, assembled with my own hands some three years ago, is based on AMD Athlon XP processor and ASUS A7V333 motherboard and is enclosed in a rather well-designed Genius case. The hardware has been doing great all this time, but the software… Well, it has just been wearing this Microsoft logo on it.

Now. Things will be different pretty soon. Yesterday I got a word from an Apple dealer that my pre-ordered PowerBook had finally arrived. The problem is I'm not in Moscow at the moment. So I will have to keep my fingers crossed so that my “old” (there's definitely some personal attitude here :) PB is still waiting for me when I'm in Moscow in a week.

The 15-inch Combo drive PowerBook G4 features 1.5Ghz PowerPC, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, 80Gb HDD and the default 512MB of memory. So, this is going to be my first serious Apple-produced hardware and software experience ever. And I'm quite excited!

I'm eager to know how long it'll take a PC-user like me to get acquainted with the product and start doing graphic and web design things on it. I just don't have the slightest idea. But I'm planning to share my “switching” experience, and will probably do it in the Russian blog, as there isn't that much switchers' evidence in Russian as there is in English.

Yesterday Apple announced the release of Mac OS X Tiger on April 29. It means I still have time to play with this Panther “cat” before bringing home its gorgeous brand-new feline relative :)

Oh, and there's time for any vital hardware improvements to the default configuration as well. So, if you have some smart advice on this, don't hesitate to share it with me.
